Hey! Look! It’s the Love Unlimited Orchestra!
Hadn’t seen them since the awful Super Movie Themes (F) album in 1979.
Barry White made up for lost time right off the bat with a god damn disco banger in “Bayou”. It’s a simple song, but it’s all about getting your ass to move with the horns firing away and Love Unlimited singing softly and sweetly.
Best Love Unlimited Orchestra song in years.
The rest of the album doesn’t reach that measure of wonderfulness, but there’s some decent stuff.
“Jamaican Girl” continues Barry White’s infatuation with Latin percussion that began in the late 1970s.
“I Wanna Boogie And Woogie With You” is about as dumb and disco-tastic as the title implies. “Vieni Qua Bella Mi” is some more slight pleasant fun. It’s got a thumping dance that’s interrupted by interludes of percussion tickin’ and guitar lickin’.
“Freeway Flyer” and “I'm In The Mood” lower the boogie fever, but still aren’t designed for you to sit still.
The worst song here is the last one: “Young America”. The vocals are corny and stupid. Even more perplexing is that the year was 1981, yet this was the most stereotypical disco song ever produced by Barry White.
Anyways, you’ll be ready to pull your hair out as the backing vocalists (who don’t sound like Love Unlimited to me) start belting “glory, glory hallelujah”.
ALBUM GRADE: C
This album isn’t good, but it can put you in a good mood, especially “Bayou”.
